Tips on Being a Better Cat Owner
Even on your worst days, no matter how foul your mood may be, your cat is always there for you.
She is the warm body next to you on the couch. She is the soother of souls with her thick fur and the deep rumble of her purr. She always does a fantastic job of being a cat. In fact, most days you think she couldn't possibly be better at her job.
What about you, though? Could you do a better job of being a cat owner? Are you doing everything you can to return the favor? If you would like a few ideas... read on...
Spend more time with your cat - Just spending some quiet time before work, after work or midday, will make a big difference. Cats love to be talked to and made to feel important.
Groom - Most cats like to be groomed or brushed. This also stimulates the skin and gets rid of dead hair. Regular grooming will also help keep your house cleaner from less shedding hair and helps prevent hairballs.
Play - Play is good for both you and your cat!
Understand your cat - Know his or her favorite type of play and their favorite time of day to play versus rest.
Feed a consistent quality diet. Supplement with healthy treats only in moderation.
Supply plenty of fresh water at all times - Clean the water bowl once daily and make sure it is always full.
Exercise - Daily exercise will keep your cat fit. Additional exercise can help with some behavior problems as well.
Not let your cat get fat. Adjust food intake for body type, provide healthy treats, and exercise regularly to avoid extra weight gain. Make sure they are eating a good quality food that they enjoy.
Never have just one cat, especially if you work and/or are out a lot. Two or more cats will keep each other company during the day.
Provide a comfortable place to sleep - Whether inside or out, your
cat should have a comfortable place to sleep.
Carefully choose toys for safety - Not just any toy will do. You really need to consider safety issues when choosing toys for your cat. For example, are there any parts that can be torn off and swallowed? Is it something he or she might "eat" thus causing a possible intestinal foreign body that could require surgery? Will it please your cat? Choose toys that cannot be chewed or swallowed. Small fur mice, round balls, or feather teasers are great interactive toys. Also, a laser pointer can be fun!
Be observant - Monitor absolutely everything your cat does. For example, did he eat all his food today? Has he been drinking? Was his urine and bowel movement normal? Is his activity level the same? How does he look? Is his hair coat okay? If you pet him, do you feel any abnormal lumps? Have you seen any coughing or vomiting? Early recognition of symptoms can save your cat's life.
If you observe that your cat is not eating all his food it may be time for a change.

Fade. 365 Days, day 263.
I watched a man as he slept on the tube yesterday.
He had a stocky frame, mouse-brown hair, fair skin with light freckles. Clean shaven except for a neatly trimmed goatee that framed his mouth, the ends of which curled down into a perpetual frown. He wore worn work pants, boots and a polo shirt with the name of an electricians company on it. His hands were broad and looked slightly rough. His bottom lip had a ring (which didn't join up, but rather ended with a ball on each end) through it, just off centre.
As he slept with his head resting against the wall, he slumped down into his frame. His folded arms slowly unfolded with the rocking of the train as it hurtled through the tunnel, letting his hands rest palm up on his lap. I watched his hands as they moved and twitched. One finger would move slightly, then his thumb, then three would curl up. Occasionally he'd pull himself forward slightly - an unconscious twitch - and wake himself up. I'd look at the tunnel passing through the window behind him while he looked around a little before settling back into his slumber. Then I'd watch again.
I sat there listening to my iPod as songs from all sorts of artists came on. People sang of love, life, guardian angels. I wondered if he had a guardian angel. I wondered if he'd been ... or would be ... a guardian angel for someone else. Who did he love? Who loved him? Did he miss them as much as the voice on the song in my head claimed they missed their loved one?
I realised how strange it was to think about this other person and watch him like this. But the alternative was close my eyes or look out the window, and neither seemed as fascinating.
Finally as we passed Chiswick Park, his phone woke him up. We pulled up at Acton town station and we both got off the train. I passed him up the stairs and very much doubt I'll ever see him again. But I think I'll remember those hands moving in his sleep for a long time.
It's funny how people fade in and out of other's lives ... Totally unaware of the impressions they leave along the way.
